Lorraine Hartmann, formerly of Bergen County and Monroe, N.J., died Sunday, March 20, 2016, at the Royal Falmouth Nursing Home after a long illness, surrounded by her loving daughters. She was 89.
One of seven children, she was born in the Bronx, N.Y., in 1927, to Sicilian immigrant parents Leo and Josephine Licari. Lorraine attended Evander Childs High School. On June 3, 1950, she married William E. Hartmann, a NY Bell Telephone employee and active Navy reservist. Daughter Diane was born the following year. The young family moved from the Bronx to the suburbs of New Jersey, and their second daughter, Marianne, was born in 1956. Lorraine was a stay-at-home mom, sewing matching mother-daughter outfits and curtains for their new house, and canning and preserving bounty from her garden. As the girls entered school, Lorraine returned to her first love, retail fashion, and joined the staff at Gimbelʼs, where she made lifelong friends among her co-workers. Her eye for style, color, and quality was appreciated by the many gentlemen customers for whom she coordinated suits, ties, shirts, and accessories.
Her husband William died in 1988, and after her retirement from Gimbelʼs, Lorraine met the second love of her life, Marvin Robin, whom she married in October 1993. They enjoyed a fairy-tale life together, dividing their time between New Jersey and Florida, indulging in ballroom dancing, traveling, golfing (Mom learned to golf!), and attending theater. They were often seen strolling hand in hand on their daily walks.
Lorraine is survived by her husband Marvin Robin of Jamaica Estates, N.Y., and by her daughters Diane Hartmann of West Tisbury, Marianne Hartmann DeBiase of Oak Park, Calif., and granddaughters Juliana and Rachel DeBiase of Oak Park, Calif., by Marvinʼs daughter Diane Geliebter, her husband Hal and their children, and his son David Robin, his wife Sarah and their children. She is also survived by her sisters Frances Ranieri of Scarsdale, N.Y., and Alice Kellachan of Larchmont, N.Y., their spouses, and brother Eugene Licari of Montrose, N.Y., as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at the McMahon, Lyon and Hartnett Funeral Home in White Plains, N.Y., and burial at the Gates of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, N.Y. The exact date and times will be posted on the McMahon, Lyons and Hartnett website (mcmahonfuneralhome.com).
