Dickinson “Dick” Murray Upson, 66, of Hornbine Road, Rehoboth, died on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2015, at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, R.I. He was the husband of the late Jeraldine Jane (Warsyk) Upson, who died on March 14, 2008.

Dick was born on June 20, 1949, in Waterbury, Conn. A longtime resident of Rehoboth, he was a graduate of Northfield Mount Hermon School, class of 1967. He was a graduate of Oberlin College, from which he received his bachelor of arts degree, and continued his postgraduate education at Kent State University, where he received his master’s degree. He went on to enjoy work as an adjunct professor of communications at Roger Williams University and Fisher College, as well as at Bristol Community College.
Dick was a former disk jockey at WHJY, a screenplay writer, and assisted with the Rhode Island Film Festival as well as at Roger Williams University radio station. He served as a member of the Liberal Arts Council, and was the executive director of the United Jewelry Show for 10 years.
Dick was a former resident of Chilmark and worked for the Chilmark Community Center. He was also as a disk jockey for the Island radio station. He spent most summers on the Vineyard, and also met and married his wife Jerry on the Island. He has many friends and family that reside on the Island.
He is survived by his children, Caitlin Q. Upson and Brooke W. Upson, both of Rehoboth. He was the brother of Thomas “Tim” F. Upson of Waterbury, Conn., and Warren “Terry” T. Upson of Naples, Fla., and leaves several nieces and nephews and many friends.
Visitation has respectfully been omitted.
A memorial service for Dick was held Oct. 3 at Community Church of Providence in Providence, R.I.
